Lag

Playing Lag, you will use your arrow keys to control a green emoticon character and his little blue buddy. Buddy will spin around you incessantly as you move about. You need to collect packages for points (and points mean prizes!) while avoiding the evil angry emoticons. You get extra points for packaged collected by buddy, but the more angry emotes you touch, the more lag you will experience. The lag will make it much more difficult to keep Buddy out of trouble! Oh, and also, your emote will continue to grow throughout the game. Good luck!

In 2009, the University of Wales, Newport was one of many worldwide locations to host the first ever Global Game Jam. I attended with little idea of what to expect. We were set a theme and some constraints: The theme was a phrase: "As long as we have each other, we shall never run out of problems". Each game should last no longer than 5 minutes. And each game should be also be related to one of the following: "growth", "rushed" or "in between".

David Prior and myself formed Team FAIL and produced our game Lag in 46 hours. We developed it in Game Maker 7, which Dave had much more experience with than me, at the time. I worked on some of the programming, art and developed all soundtrack. We actually finished the core of the game to the extent we were expecting in about half the time. This afforded us some time to spend polishing the game.

We received a great review at IndieGames.com where Lag is listed as one of the "Best of the GGJ". The official Global Game Jam page for Lag is here.
